Chapter 9

Sorry for the wait, Chapter 9: Just Die, I’m Begging You, is out!

I believe this is the chapter that inspired the title of this manga series. I’ve had some conflicting discussions with Japanese native speakers about this title, but here is as good of a place as any to explain.

The first part “Shinitaku naru Shoumonai Hibi ga Shinitaku naru kurai Shoumonakute” means something along the lines of “The boring days that make you want to die are so boring that you’ll want to die.”

The second part, “Shinuhodo Shinitakunai Hibi.” means “The days where you really don’t want to die so much that you could just die.”

The confusing part is how these two phrases are linked together. I originally thought that it was just a bit of wordplay and that once you get to the second phrase you see that the entire first phrase was really an intensifier describing just how much you don’t want to die. I talked to a native speaker (in English and Japanese) who seemed a bit confused about the whole thing but he confirmed this interpretation.

But later another very passionate native speaker argued that the title means more or less, “Precisely because the days are so boring and you want to die so much, this intensity causes you to see the beauty in life and you then very much don’t want to die.” He added a pretty personal story from his own life that kind of made it awkward to ask follow-up questions. In any case, this interpretation makes some sense, so you might want to think about the title as you read this chapter to see if you think there is a connection.

Chapters 7 and 8

sasaki

The books arrived so I don’t have to use raws full of jpeg artifacts anymore! It’s also more pleasant to read and translate from a physical book.

The only real extra translator note this time is in Chapter 8 when I had Sasaki say “wine coolers” she really said Happoshu (発泡酒), which is a style of beer with reduced malt flavoring in order to avoid a liquor tax. I have no idea what it tastes like or if it is sweet (frankly ordinary Japanese beer already seems a little light to me), but Sasaki indeed says reduced sugar, so I figured a wine cooler would fit.

Chapters 5 and 6

chirattaI found out the person I ordered the books from took a week just to ship them, so rather than have what could be a month gap if I’m unlucky, I decided to release Chapters 5 and 6 now.

I don’t have as many extra translator notes as I did for Chapter 4, but one thing I’d like to point out is in Chapter 5, when I translated Kaga as saying “Oh my gah,” she really said “Letsu parry,” which is another funny English mispronunciation that I figured wasn’t known enough to reference directly. When I ran into my ex-girlfriend and found out she’s been widowed

This is a short story that was posted by an anonymous author in a thread on the Japanese 2channel bulletin board.

The author is posting under the hash code: 台風29号 ◆Tp9piHFiRU (The Japanese part means “Typhoon #29”). Any posts without this code are comments by the readers. An edit of the original Japanese thread can be found for instance here.

I think it’s really worth the read! (Obviously, or I wouldn’t have translated it!)

One day I ran into my ex-girlfriend.
We had some free time, so we talked for a bit to catch up, and I found out that she had been widowed.

I’m going write at length about the storm of events that suddenly overtook my otherwise ordinary life. If you’re looking for something to do you can join me lol

Oh, thanks for being so quick lol

First our specs:
Me = Late thirties, have a wife, no mistress.
Ordinary middle manager. I think my salary’s pretty average but I don’t have much extra to spend lol
I don’t have a bad relationship with my wife, but you wouldn’t say we’re crazy about each other either.

Ex-gf = Same age. Back then she was slightly chubby and had large breasts. But now she seems a little wasted away.
Apparently her husband recently died from some illness. She has a daughter in high school.
She has a faint resemblance to Misono*, so from now on I’ll call her that.

When I first ran into her it was on a Saturday afternoon with a cool autumn breeze. It was at a center inside a shopping mall.
I was taking my youngest child there for lessons.
While I was waiting for my son to sign in his name at the front desk, I noticed the woman behind the desk looked vaguely familiar.
At the same time she was staring back at me with the same look on her face.

…and now… after that brief introduction, our tale begins.

Chapter 4 is out:       Online Reader       Download

Here is a link to a short clip of the Manzai act Cool Poko’s catch phrase (Naa-nii-!? Yacchimatta na!) that Oka was doing an impression of. It’s the first thing the guy with the hammer says (he says “Ore yacchimatta na!” in this case).

This chapter was kind of a headache to translate because of the wordplay in Sena’s thought bubbles, so I have translator notes below the fold, if you’re into that kind of thing. Continue reading

Shinuhodo Shinitakunai Hibi

cover

I’ve started working on a title (a very long title) by Tomomi Abe (阿部共実) the author of Chii-chan wa Chotto Tarinai.

The title is: Shinitakunaru Shoumonai Hibi ga Shinitakunaru kurai Shoumonakute Shinuhodo Shinitakunai Hibi.

The shortened version in the title of this post means: Days where you don’t want to die so much that you could just die.

Each chapter has a different story and different characters. Only the first chapter has been translated so far, so I’ve decided to take it up. I’ve posted the second chapter on Batoto in the link below, and I’ve started translations for the rest:
